Delivering Digital Accessibility – Glasswall’s Approach to Online Inclusivity

Digital accessibility has become a key consideration for organizations committed to creating fully inclusive products and services. The aim of any accessibility strategy should be to remove any barriers that prevent individuals with disabilities from effectively interacting with websites, digital tools and technologies.

The impact of digital accessibility, or the lack of it, on individuals with disabilities can be profound. For example, inaccessible digital content and services can result in unequal access to online information and services, limit employment opportunities and directly lead to social isolation. Delivered effectively, however, accessibility can empower individuals with disabilities to participate in and enjoy equal online freedom in today’s increasingly connected society.

So, how can digital accessibility be delivered? The key to an effective approach is to recognize and follow recognized standards, such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) – the internationally recognized model for delivering digital accessibility. These guidelines provide a framework for designing and developing digital content that is Perceivable, Operable, Understandable and Robust (POUR) for users with a diverse range of disabilities.

By adhering to WCAG standards, organizations can be confident that they are creating inclusive digital environments, complying with legal requirements and demonstrating a commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility.

How does Glasswall approach accessibility?

At Glasswall, we recognize the importance of digital accessibility and have made it a foundation of our product design and development processes. Using WCAG 2.2, level AA standards as our target level of compliance, we work hard to meet and exceed these requirements wherever possible.

To support our accessibility strategy, we have also created an internal accessibility committee, which is tasked with promoting accessible solutions across our product range. This committee is responsible for building institutional awareness of the standards we work towards and prioritizing the creation of design strategies that meet these important guidelines.

In addition, we have appointed a member of our team to oversee our accessibility initiatives and ensure that our products and digital assets are continuously reviewed for compliance. Recently, we also published our Organizational Accessibility Statement on our website, which sets out our objectives and progress toward meeting our target standards. This also provides users with a way of contacting us if they encounter any accessibility issues or want to raise questions.

A focus on continuous improvement

Maintaining digital accessibility is an ongoing process as standards evolve and new digital assets and features are introduced. At Glasswall, we are actively working to ensure that not only our current developments but also existing digital assets and web content comply with WCAG 2.2, level AA accessibility standards.

Looking ahead, we aim to enhance our accessibility efforts via external user testing and gathering feedback from individuals with disabilities. This will be invaluable in identifying further areas for improvement and ensuring that our products and services meet the needs of our entire user base.

Commenting on Glasswall’s approach to accessibility, Alyssa Jones, Glasswall's User Experience Designer, said, “We believe that digital accessibility is not just a legal or technical requirement but is fundamental to the creation of inclusive and equitable online experiences. By prioritizing accessibility in our product design and development processes, we aim to eliminate barriers and empower individuals with disabilities to access and engage seamlessly with our organization at every level.”
